If you’re looking for inspiration to fill your kitchen with the smell of fresh bakes and keep your family well-fed all week long, this post is for you. In this video ‘Baking for the Week: Healthy, Homemade Treats’, I made a batch of multigrain sourdough bread, muffins, and banana bread — all family favourites! I used whole wheat flour for added nutrition, and long-fermented the doughs for better digestion and flavour. Whether you’re baking ahead for snacks, breakfast, or lunchboxes, these tried-and-tested recipes are both nourishing and satisfying.

Why Bake for the Whole Week?

When trying to feed a family healthy, homemade food, snacks are often the most difficult thing to change. Children today are used to sugar-filled industrial food, and often the healthier, homemade options are less appealing to them. I also find that it is very difficult to keep up with demand! I would need to bake something every day for my hungry brood of four!

That is why I have opted to do a weekly bake whenever I can. That way I can be sure that my kids have something healthy to snack on after school, there is always something to hand for a quick breakfast and I can pull out an easy dessert for a child that is still hungry after dinner.

Top Tip!

I have been making a lot of muffins recently and freezing them so that they will last longer – this is especially practical for the weeks that I have no time to bake.

This week I made:

  • Banana Bread
  • Blueberry Muffins
  • Strawberry Muffins
  • Multigrain Sourdough Bread with Freshly Milled Flour

Baking for the Week: Healthy, Homemade Treats Your Family Will Love n°1 Sourdough Blueberry Muffins

Since getting a grain mill, these Whole Wheat Blueberry Muffins have become one of my favourite things to bake. I like to long-ferment the batter so that my boys, who were previously allergic to gluten, can enjoy them too. The muffins turn out soft and moist — you would never guess they’re dairy free! As an added bonus, they’re incredibly easy to make. Get the full recipe here!

Ingredients:

Makes 12 muffins

  • 200g whole wheat flour or wheat berries (see below)
  • 100g sourdough discard or active starter
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 120 ml oil
  • 200g honey
  • 1 tsp natural vanilla essence
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 125g blueberries

These Strawberry Muffins are bursting with the flavours of Spring! Again, I like to make them with freshly milled flour for extra nutrition, and long ferment them for easier digestion. Add a cream cheese icing and you have a luxurious dessert! Get the full recipe here!

Baking for the Week: Healthy, Homemade Treats Your Family Will Love n°3 Multigrain Sourdough Bread

This is my absolute favourite sourdough bread recipe – those grains absolutely take it to the next level! This week I made it with freshly milled flour and increased the water to 370g, but that was the only change I made to the original recipe. Why not give it a try, you won’t be disappointed, I promise! Get the full recipe here!

Ingredients:

  • 500g wholewheat French flour (T110)
  • 350g warm water
  • 120g active starter
  • 10g salt
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 tbsp sunflower seeds

Baking for the Week: Healthy, Homemade Treats Your Family Will Love n°4 Banana Bread

Ok, so in the video, I made the banana bread that I have been making for years, but I have to say that my absolute favourite recipe is the Sourdough Banana Bread from the Clever Carrot. If you have a sourdough discard, you need to try it – it is amazing! Get the recipe here!
