This simple meal plan with a shopping list is designed to make weeknight dinners easier, calmer, and more enjoyable for busy families.

When it comes to cooking from scratch, the biggest hurdles to overcome are finding ideas, meal planning, and shopping. For most people I talk to, the actual cooking isn’t the problem, but rather all the steps needed before you even start frying that onion.

If you’ve ever stood in front of your fridge at 5pm wondering what to cook, you’re not alone.

This meal planning system aims to solve exactly those problems, using a simple, flexible structure built around a small number of ingredients.

How This Easy Weeknight Dinner Meal Plan with Shopping List Works

This plan uses a reduced number of ingredients that can be mixed and matched to make 16+ meals — that’s almost a full month of weeknight dinners.

Instead of planning completely different meals every day, you simply:

  • Using the base recipes provided, pick the variations that sound good to you that week
  • Add the same ingredients to your shopping list (with a couple of variations)
  • Cook simple, nourishing meals without overthinking

Meal planning becomes easy. Gone is the decision fatigue, endless recipe checking, and constant worry about forgetting ingredients.

With time, providing nourishing homemade food for your family becomes simple and second nature.

If this sounds helpful, you can find my Flexible Weeknight Dinner Plan here.

Built for Flexibility, Not Perfection

My hope for this plan is that you will learn to customise each recipe to your own tastes.

Don’t like spinach? Swap it for peas.
Have a freezer full of sausage meat? Use that instead of beef.

That’s what home cooking is all about — leaning into what your family enjoys and making recipes your own.

Further down the line, you may find that there are other recipes you enjoy that you can use this same method for. This is more than a meal plan, this is a method that can be followed, reproduced, changed and customised to suit any family.

Bonus Rice Bowl Ideas for Extra Simplicity

For those evenings when you don’t fancy one of the base recipes, I’ve included some simple rice bowl ideas.

They are quick to make and create variety using the same ingredients. Simply add:

  • Seasoned cooked meat
  • Some salad or veg
  • A simple sauce
  • Steamed rice

Dinner is ready with very little effort. What’s Included in the Plan

In this meal plan with shopping list you will find:

  • A printable, customisable shopping list
  • A master ingredient list that all recipes pull from
  • Base recipes with clear variations
  • Dairy and/or gluten free alternatives
  • Make-ahead, batch cooking and time-saving tips
  • Bonus rice bowl ideas
  • A conversion table to adapt recipes to your family size
  • A printable weekly meal planner

How to Use This Meal Plan System For Easy Homemade Dinners

  1. Decide which recipes you want to make this week and fill in the meal plan sheet. I like to do this based on how busy I expect each day to be, choosing quicker meals for busier evenings.
  2. Customise the shopping list according to what you already have. Check your fridge and pantry first so you only buy what you need and avoid waste.
  3. If helpful, prepare a few ingredients in advance when you have time.
  4. Follow the base recipes and adapt using the variations provided.

Then simply enjoy stress-free, homemade food with your family.

A Simple Ingredient Philosophy

For these recipes, I’ve kept ingredients as simple as possible: meat that cooks quickly, vegetables that are easy to prepare, canned beans to save time, and shop-bought pastry for convenience.

You can always adapt based on your family’s preferences — just bear in mind that substitutions may change cooking times.
